Nelson Airport (Māori: Te Papa Waka Rererangi o Whakatū) (IATA: NSN, ICAO: NZNS), located 6 km south-west of central Nelson, is the sixth-busiest airport in New Zealand by 1.2 million passengers annually. Its scheduled airlines reach to Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Palmerston North.
Nelson is the largest urban area in the upper South Island, positioned on the shores of Tasman Bay. Often known as ‘the Top of the South’, Nelson Tasman takes up the northwestern corner of the South Island. Nelson City (population 50,000) is a 5 hours drive from Christchurch. By air, Nelson is just 30 minutes from Wellington, 40 minutes from Christchurch, and about 1 hour from Auckland.
Nelson often tops New Zealand’s sunshine hours (Nickname ’Sunny Nelson‘, around 2,500 hours of sunshine per year). Nelson’s port is the largest deep-sea fishing port in Australasia. There are also a range of growth industries, including arts and craft, aviation, engineering technology, and information technology.
