Chief Flight Instructor and Training Manager

As Chief Flight Instructor (CFI) and Training Manager, Struan’s aviation career began during the pioneering days of NewZealand’s deer recovery operations. Operating within the rugged and challenging mountainous terrain of Fiordland, he quickly developed advanced skills inmountain flying. His expertise led him to the Wakatipu region, where he spentseveral decades as a Senior Flight Instructor and Training Manager for large commercial flight operations. These operations serviced high-demand destinations such as Milford Sound, Mount Cook, and seasonal flight operations for the Hollyford and Milford Track Walks.

Struan’s technical proficiency extends beyond fixed-wing aircraft, with significant experience in helicopter operations. Heis licensed to fly in diverse and challenging regions, including Australia,Indonesia, Papua, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Nepal. Notably, he worked with the World Geological Society, conducting aerial research for earthquake and tsunami relief efforts. His expertise in humanitarian aviation was honed over many years while living in Iran Jaya, where he coordinated medical and supply flightsand developed check and training programs for both local and international flight crews.

One of his more recent technical achievements involved a six-year project mapping the entirety of New Zealand for LINZ (Land Information New Zealand). This project included digital photography and terrain mapping to support flood prediction models, showcasing Struan’s strong technical background in geospatial data acquisition and analysis. His comprehensive understanding of New Zealand's diverse landscapes makes him aninvaluable guide for students navigating these areas.

Struan’s passion for professional aviation development is matched by his deep knowledge of international flight operations. He brings extensive real-time instructing experience to the academy, ensuring that students receive the highest level of technical training and practical application.
